Design

Although in many ways the garden has evolved over the years, we have been inspired by visits to other gardens both large and small:

Great Comp in Kent with its many interesting follies and great structure

Sherborne Garden in Somerset for its wadi and phormiums

The Courts in Wiltshire for its balance between formality and informality

Abbey House Gardens in Wiltshire for its sheer exuberance

RHS Gardens at Wisley, Rosemoor and Hyde Hall

As we have developed the garden we have tried to maintain views of the surrounding countryside but at the same time providing shelter from the salt-laden, south-westerly winds. As we maintain the garden ourselves, we seek to provide a balance between labour-intensive perennial borders and fruit and vegetable plots, and more easily maintained areas of trees and shrubs.
